Fórsa to hold meeting for Donegal school secretaries

Fórsa is holding an information meeting for Donegal school secretaries on new employment proposals next week.

It’s ahead of a ballot of school secretary members on a set of proposals designed to regularise their employment terms and conditions.

Draft proposals were finalised last week at the WRC which include a new pay scale aligned with civil service grade III clerical officer, an agreed method of assimilation into the new pay scale, alternative arrangements to the current practice of signing on for social protection payments during school holidays, a centralised payroll system and standardised arrangements for maternity leave, sick leave and annual leave.

Fórsa said that while the proposals did not include any substantial progress on pensions, the union reserved the right to press the case for suitable pension arrangements in the future.

A ballot of Fórsa’s school secretary members is to commence shortly, and the union will provide a detailed analysis of the proposals.

The meeting in Donegal next week is one of a series of information meetings taking place as the ballot gets underway.

The meeting will take place at the Mount Errigal Hotel, Letterkenny from 7pm to 8.30pm next Monday March 7th.

Pressure at LUH: 120 patients presenting daily

120 patients on average have been presenting to Letterkenny University Hospital for treatment every day over the past week.

Management has confirmed that the situation has resulted in significant delays and pressure on bed availability at the hospital.

Figures released this evening show that 139 people attended the Emergency Department yesterday.

The high number of people attending who need to be admitted for ongoing treatment means that there is pressure on bed availability and this is resulting in significant delays being experienced by patients in the Emergency Department who are waiting for a bed to become available on a ward.

In addition the hospital continues to be impacted by COVID-19.

As of 8pm last night there were 23 patients with COVID-19 being treated in the hospital.

All available beds are in use including an additional 23 escalation beds. Every effort is being made to discharge patients who are ready to go home so that beds will become available for patients who need to be admitted, at the earliest opportunity.

The hospital acknowledges that these delays are very difficult for patients and their families and apologises for the inconvenience and distress these delays cause.

The hospital is committed to treating everyone who presents at the Emergency Department; people who are seriously injured or ill are assessed and treated as a priority and those who do not require urgent care may be waiting longer. If your health problem is not an emergency you should contact your GP during normal surgery hours or the NoWDOC GP out of hours service, in the first instance.

Breaking: Ten ambulances backed up at LUH

It’s been claimed that there are currently ten ambulances backed up at Letterkenny University Hospital.

This equates to roughly three quarters of the entire fleet available to Donegal in any given day.

Cllr Gerry McMonagle who is also chair of the Regional Health Form West says the situation appears to have hit crisis level.

Cllr McMonagle says this in turn could lead to delays in other emergencies being attended to and is demanding urgent clarity as to whether extra resources are being called in from elsewhere:

HSE must recruit 9,500 people a year just to ‘stand still’

The HSE says it must recruit 9,500 people a year just to ‘stand still’.

CEO Paul Reid says staff turnover means the health service would need to recruit almost 20-thousand new staff in order to meet its recruitment targets.

The HSE came before an Oireachtas Committee last month, after details of an internal meeting with Department of Health officials described recruitment targets as ‘fake’.

The Minister for Health today approved a 20.7 billion euro service plan for the HSE for 2022.
