Schools returning to normal ‘will take time’

It’s going to take some time before schools fully return to normal, post covid, according to some principals.

Future of rail in NW to be explored at upcoming webinar

The future of rail in the North West is to be explored at an upcoming webinar.

A discussion will take place next Monday March 7th between Derry City and Strabane District Council, Government and transport representatives and local campaigners on how to transform rail connectivity in the region.

Organised by Derry City and Strabane District Council, the Rail Ambition webinar follows a public consultation into developing the rail network across Ireland, as part of the All-Island Strategic Rail Review.

The free online event will also explore how improved rail provision can boost employment, the economy and environmental sustainability.

The webinar will hear from Transport Minister Eamon Ryan, the North’s Minister for Infrastructure, Nichola Mallon, Mayor, Alderman Graham Warke and representatives from Translink, the Department for Infrastructure, Into the West campaign group and Donegal Railway Heritage Centre.

Earlier this month, members of Derry City and Strabane District Council’s Governance and Strategic Planning Committee endorsed the Council’s official response to the Strategic Rail Review which called for faster and more frequent rail services to and from Derry to Belfast, seamless onward connections to and from Dublin, and a future direct connection to Dublin via Strabane and Omagh.

Other proposals include rail connections from Derry to Letterkenny and onwards to Sligo and the Galway Atlantic Corridor, and a suburban rail service serving Derry and the wider North West City Region, with halts at Eglinton and at the City of Derry Airport.

Letterkenny woman keeping the scores

Letterkenny’s Laura McMenamin is the registrar of the eight round Triton Showers National Rally Championship that begins on Sunday next with the Claremorris based Mayo Rally. Photo: Martin Walsh

The Triton Showers National Rally Championship swings into action on Sunday next with the Claremorris based Mayo Rally, the first of the eight round series. Letterkenny woman Laura McMenamin is the registrar for the series. Very often, it’s a role that many people don’t realise it actually exists, yet its highly important.

Laura’s parents Ivan and Cynthia Fuery are steeped in motorsport and need no introduction, so it was really no surprise that Laura became involved. She explains. “Rallying was part of normal day to day life in our house. Before an event, the house would have been like a rally office, it would be full of people coming and going all day. Then the rest of the time people would always be calling to get their membership (Donegal Motor Club) and licences sorted.” Laura had an early induction to the sport, understandable it’s not a vivid memory. “I can’t say I remember the first one I saw, but apparently I was taken to my first rally (the Circuit of Ireland) when I was six weeks old.”

She is far more definitive as to when her involvement in the National Rally Championship, began. “I first got involved in the championship back in 2005, Joan Gallagher (another Donegal woman) was registrar at the time and had asked me if I was interested in getting involved so I went to a couple of events with her that year to see what was involved and I took on the role as registrar from 2006.”

Laura explains the role. “It is everything from helping the championship chairman (currently Declan Tumilty) with plans to organise the championship, dealing with social media and preparing the championship booklet, promoting and speaking to competitors to see if they are interested in contesting the championship, dealing with the clubs and preparation for each event.”

Obviously, rally weekends are busy. “Registration is completed the evening before and I deal with all the competitors, answer any queries in relation to the championship, then make sure they have their championship decals on their car prior to leaving parc ferme.”

She added, “We also try to keep social media very active on the day of the rally and try and speak to as many of our registered competitors. We attend the finish ramp celebrations and return home where I complete the social media round up for the day.”

Of course, there is still the most important part of the task to be completed. “Normally on Monday nights after an event, I work out the points for each competitor, it can be time consuming and in some cases it takes a few more nights.”

Even before the final round, Laura and the championship chairman and committee are organising the awards night where another season comes to an end and before she knows, Laura will be back on the roads around Ireland to begin yet another championship journey.

Donelan and Mahdy among doubts for Harps trip to Dundalk

Harps new boy Regan Donelon

Finn Harps travel to Oriel Park tonight to take on Dundalk FC. Kickoff is 7.45pm.

Harps will feel unlucky to have come away with only a point from their season opener at UCD on Friday and will be hoping to build on a solid defensive display. The hosts are yet to notch their first win of the 2022 season, playing out entertaining draws with Derry City and Bohemians respectively.

Ollie Horgan told FinnHarps.ie “Two games over a weekend is a tough enough ask, but both of them being away from home makes it that bit more difficult again. We’ve been on the wrong side of some heavy defeats at Oriel Park in my time and while there’s been a lot of change there in the last year or two there’s no denying the quality they have at their disposal.

For us, we’ll see who is ready to play after picking up a few knocks on Friday and take it from there. Hopefully we can keep it tight with only a goal or so in it near the end to give us a chance of coming away with something.”

In team news Regan Donelon, Yoyo Mahdy, Ryan Connolly and Ethan Boyle are doubts.

Harkin to miss Derry’s derby with Sligo

Ciaran Harkin

There’s a quick turnaround for all clubs this week with another full set of Premier Division fixtures on Monday night.

And following their exciting win at home to Shamrock Rovers on Friday, the Candystripes are back at the Brandywell again where they will host North West neighbours, Sligo Rovers.

The ‘Bit ‘o Red’ got their own campaign off to a fantastic start at the weekend with an impressive win in Inchicore.

They will no doubt look to carry that into this game, mindful however that they only took one point from four games against Ruaidhri Higgins’ side last season.

The City boss confirmed yesterday that Ciaron Harkin will miss the first ‘derby’ of the campaign after the midfielder was forced off towards the end of Friday night’s match.

“We’ll have him scanned this week to see the extent of the injury but he’ll play no part in this one. Other than that we’re working with the same squad from the weekend” said Higgins.

Reflecting on the first couple of games, the City boss said he was happy with the start, but it was only that.

“Once we came off the field we were turning our attention to Monday night. We can’t afford to lose the momentum of nights like this” he said.

“Of course it’s a tough start but every game in this league is a challenge.”

“Sligo have gone to St Pats and won and not many teams will do that this season. They’re a very good side and we need to be at the top of our game.”

The Manager was also full of praise for the sell-out crowd that packed the stadium for the first home game of 2022.

“They were outstanding all night and that really drove the players on” he said.

“I know we’ll be in front of another full house on Monday and hopefully they can lift us towards another positive result.”

Post Title

A South Donegal Deputy is calling on the Department of Finance to investigate whether cars are being “unjustly seized” by customs for non-payment of VRT.

Deputy Marian Harkin believes there is a discrepancy between the number of warnings issued compared to the number of vehicles impounded.

Currently, customs officers have the power to seize a vehicle from an Irish citizen who is driving a vehicle which is not registered in the state.

Deputy Harkin says powers must be exerted proportionately and fairly:

A property in Lifford was broken into on Friday night while on Saturday night, a property in Newtowncunningham and Bridgend was targeted along with two houses in Burt.
