Mica homeowners send letter of demands to Housing Minister

An extensive list of Mica homeowners’ questions has been sent to Housing Minister Darragh O’Brien.

The 13 page document raises questions on issues which the Mica Action Group believe have not yet been addressed or require greater clarity, including; the sliding scale element, the inclusion of foundations in the scheme, a Defective Concrete Block Scheme bill legislation and terms around holiday homes and rental property owners accessing the scheme.

The letter was sent to the Minister in the absence of homeowner representatives being part of the revised scheme expert group despite assurances given that they would have a seat at the table.

PRO of the Mica Action Group, Michael Doherty says the ball is now back in the Housing Department’s court:

Doherty: Finance Minister’s inaction has excluded disabled citizens

A Donegal Deputy claims the Finance Minister’s inaction despite repeated warnings has excluded citizens with disabilities from financial support.

Deputy Pearse Doherty has criticised the Minister for ignoring repeated warnings from the Disabled Drivers Medical Board of Appeal that citizens with severe and permanent disabilities were being unfairly excluded from a financial support scheme that he is responsible for.

The Disabled Drivers and Passengers Scheme provides financial support for the purchase and use of adapted vehicles by drivers and passengers with a disability.

Deputy Doherty in the Dail, put the pressure back on Tanaiste Leo Varadkar:

Donegal County Council to appoint Vacant Housing Officer

Donegal County Council says it will shortly be appointing a Vacant Homes Officer as part of its response to the high level of vacancy and dereliction in the county.

The issue was raised by Cllr Ciaran Brogan, who asked what steps the council was taking to issue Compulsory Purchase Orders on derelict buildings.

Responding to Cllr Brogan, the council said the government’s recent ‘Housing for All’ strategy has
placed a new focus on the issue.

They say this strategy will require a review of vacancy and dereliction across the county, accompanied by a list of where priority interventions, including potential CPO actions, may lie within the overarching aims of regeneration and provision of housing options.

The officials says a high level examination of vacancy in the region has already been published by the Northern and Western Regional Assembly that will also inform the work of Council.

A Vacant Homes Officer will be appointed to follow through with identified priorities.

The council says resources have also been applied to the preparation of focused baseline studies using the Town Centre Health Check approach, which is back by the Heritage Council.

This an other strategies have been included in work which has been done in a number of towns, including Letterkenny, Ballyshannon, Bundoran, Donegal Town, Buncrana, Moville, Ramelton, Ballybofey/Stranorlar, Dungloe, Rathmullan and Carndonagh with further assessments planned during 2022.
