Breaking: Part of enhanced redress scheme regulations to be signed today

The Housing Minister has confirmed that some of the regulations contained in the enhanced Mica Redress Scheme will be signed this evening.

The CEO of Donegal County Council, John McLaughlin told a special meeting this afternoon that Housing Minister Darragh O’Brien gave assurances at a housing summit held in Dublin yesterday that the regulations around engineering fees and emergency works would be signed this evening.

The Minister stressed that he wanted to keep the regulations simple for both the council and homeowners to ensure funds are available quickly.

While the enhanced scheme is being worked through, Donegal County Council is not aware of the full details of yet.

Buncrana Area Plan moves forward

The local area plan for Buncrana has been given the go ahead to progress further.

The plan is to move forward in tandem with Bundoran and the Twin Towns.

Cllr Rena Donaghey says it’ll mean the plan will be fast tracked by a year paving the way for lands to be zoned for housing construction.

Cllr Donaghey says its major news for the peninsula with the ever rising housing waiting list and the area being regarded as the epicentre of the Mica crisis:

More than 1,200 diabetic patients awaiting appointments at LUH

 

More than 1,200 diabetic patients are currently awaiting review appointments at Letterkenny University Hospital.

Latest figures show that there are 563 review appointments with Consultants now overdue.

In addition, there are 659 patients with review appointments already scheduled for 2022.

Cllr Gerry McMonagle raised a number of questions regarding the matter at the latest sitting of the Regional Health Form.

He says a number of avenues could be explored to address the backlog:

Public apology over historical institutional abuse in North to go ahead

 

A public apology to victims of historical institutional abuse in Northern Ireland will go ahead on the 11th of March.

Plans for the long awaited apology – originally set to be delivered by the First and Deputy First Ministers – had been put into doubt since the collapse of the Executive.

It’s now been confirmed it’ll be delivered in the Stormont Assembly by 5 other ministers instead.

Suspected Class B drugs seized in Donemana

 

A quantity of suspected Class B drugs have been seized in Donemana.

The seizure was made after officers on patrol on Berryhill Road in Donemana on Tuesday were alerted to a vehicle in the area just before 6pm.

Following checks carried out at the scene, officers subsequently seized a quantity of suspected cannabis in the car.

The 20-year-old driver will be reported to the Public Prosecution Service for offences, including driving while disqualified, driving with no insurance and possession of a Class B controlled drug.

Sergeant Wilders said: “This was good police work by our officers on routine patrol in the village, and I want to take this opportunity to appeal to anyone with information or concerns about drugs activity in the area, to please contact us so we can take action. The information you tell us helps makes our neighbourhoods safer.”

Information can be provided on the non-emergency number 101.

Green light for new Dunfanaghy Primary Care Centre

 

The HSE has given the green light for work to start on the new Dunfanaghy Primary Care Centre.

The project was originally estimated to cost 2.5 million euro and its completion is set to be a major asset to the local community.

The project has faced a lengthy delay.

Residents in Lifford estate plagued by flooding issues

Residents in a housing estate in east Donegal are said to be plagued by flooding issues.

St. Judes Court in Lifford was built over 20 years ago however its understood that the road surface in the estate was never completed.

As a result, many drain covers are sitting above road level with almost all of them said to be completely blocked.

Some homeowners can’t access their house without stepping through several inches of water.

One resident Veronica says they have reached out to various bodies and none of them are taking responsibility:

Fury over plans to retain aging sewer pipe

 

Serious concern has been raised over reports that an 80 year old sewerage pipe is set to remain in Kerrykeel.

Irish Water is currently carrying out work on a new sewerage treatment system along the main street in the village however the old pipe in question is not going to be replaced as part of the plans.

It’s understood that the sewer had had history of blockage and leaks.

The pipe is to continue serving around 500 homes and businesses in the area.

‘Huge opportunities’ afoot for Letterkenny following project approval

 

The provision of two new multi million euro business, enterprise and innovation centres in Letterkenny is a step closer.

The project under the Councils part 8 development process has been given the green light at a special meeting of the Council today.

The proposed development will include the demolition of the former ESB retail and office premises and existing sheds to the rear of the site located on the Pearse Road.

Work on long awaited one-way system to start shortly

 

Work on a long awaited one way system in the heart of Letterkenny is to begin next month.

The traffic system was first proposed in 2018 but had been stalled due to funding constraints.

Donegal County Council has confirmed that the necessary funding has now been allocated with construction due to start at the end of March.

The project includes changing the traffic flow in the town from St. Eunan’s Cathedral to St. Colmcille NS St. Eunans College and Scoil Mhuire gan Smal.
