Nearly 7,600 reports of assaults on HSE staff last year

There were nearly 7,600 reports of assaults on HSE staff last year.

Over 5,800 were physical, while 41 were sexual and nearly 1,700 were verbal.

According to freedom of information figures, almost half of the victims were nurses.

Phil Ni Sheaghdha from the Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation, says it’s a very serious problem.

Taoiseach rules out deferring rise in carbon tax

 

The Taoiseach has ruled out the idea of deferring a planned rise in the carbon tax.

He was speaking as the Dáil debated a motion from Sinn Féin last night calling for the planned rises this year to be deferred.

Micheál Martin has warned fuel costs are likely to increase again as a result of sanctions against Russia and Germany halting a planned gas pipeline.

Dail to hear calls for introduction of mini budget

The Dail will later hear calls for the introduction of a mini budget to address the rising cost of living.

The Rural Independent Group, which’s bringing the motion, says the issue’s now a national emergency that requires comprehensive action.

Among the measures being demanded are a 20 euro increase to social welfare payments, a 50 percent reduction in fuel taxes and a 75 million euro package to help struggling farmers.

Government urged to publish report on post offices

A Donegal Deputy has called on the Government to publish the report on post office offline services.

Deputy Thomas Pringle told the Dail that following a meeting with postmasters in Donegal, that they are waiting anxiously for the publication of the interdepartmental group report.

He says postmasters are feeling disregarded by Government:

Minister for Public Expenditure and Reform, Michael McGrath says he expects the report to be published shortly but doesn’t believe that it will be a quick fix for post offices.

Investigation launched after car found in ditch

Police are investigating a report of a traffic collision during the early hours of yesterday morning.

A car was found abandoned and police are keen for those involved in the incident to come forward.

Just before 2:30am yesterday, a blue Ford Fiesta was reported to have been found in a ditch on Victoria Road, between Strabane and Ballymagorry.

Officers responded and located the vehicle, however, there was no one in the car.

Despite extensive checks carried out by officers at the scene, they were unable to locate anyone.

An investigation is underway into the incident, and police are working to establish who was driving the vehicle, where it had come from and where it was being driven to.

Police are appealing for the occupant, or occupants of the car to contact them immediately.

Police are also asking anyone who was driving on Victoria Road between 1:30am and 2:25am and who believes they saw the vehicle, or who may have captured it on their dashcam, to get in touch on 101.

Week of terror for Mica homeowners, Dail hears

 

The Dail has heard that Mica homeowners were fearful of what they would wake up to in the midst of adverse weather conditions that battered Donegal over the past week.

Donegal Deputy Pearse Doherty pressed Minister for Public Expenditure and Reform Michael McGrath on when homeowners would see the enhanced redress scheme rolled out.

He told Minister McGrath that it has been a ‘difficult and frightening time’ for Mica homeowners:

The Minister for Public Expenditure and Reform has accused Donegal Deputy Pearse Doherty of being ‘duplicitous’.

There were heated exchanges in the Dail this afternoon after the Sinn Fein Finance Spokesperson once again called on the Government to tackle the rising costs of living.
