Government warned of immediate need to tackle family homelessness

The Children’s Rights Alliance has warned that immediate action is needed to tackle family homelessness.

The group has today published it’s Report Card awarding the Government an E grade over child homelessness.

Latest figures from the Department of Housing show that in the North West, 7 families were homeless in December. 10 of them children.

Man arrested and drugs seized following incident in Derry

A man has been arrested in Derry and drugs with an estimated street value of £2,000 seized following an incident in last night.

The 45-year-old was arrested on suspicion of a number driving-related and drug-related offences, including driving with excess alcohol, driving with no insurance, being concerned in the supply of a Class B drug, possession of a Class B controlled drug with intent to supply and possession of a Class C controlled drug.

He has also been arrested on suspicion of resisting police and assault on police.

The man remains in custody at this time, assisting officers with enquiries.

The arrest was made when officers responded to a call shortly before 11:10pm expressing concern about a vehicle that had left commercial premises in the Pennyburn Industrial Estate area.

Officers were able to locate and stop the vehicle a short time later in the Glenshane Road area. A search of the vehicle recovered a quantity of suspected Class B drugs. During a follow-up search at a property in the area, officers seized a further quantity of suspected Class B and Class C drugs.

Anyone with information about illegal drug use or supply, is asked to call police on the non-emergency number 101.

Donnelly set to unveil ‘ambitious’ waiting list plan

The Health Minister says the HSE needs to be pushed out of its comfort zone in order to tackle hospital waiting lists.

A 350 million euro plan to reduce hospital waiting lists will be published later this week.

Currently, almost 18 thousand people have been waiting for an inpatient procedure for more than 12 months, while 155 thousand have been on the outpatient waiting list for more than 18 months.

Minister Stephen Donnelly says the situation is unacceptable…………

More details emerge about last week’s joint Garda-PSNI drug seizures

More than 70-thousand euro worth of drugs have been seized as part of a cross-border operation by gardai and the PSNI.

The Joint Agency Task Force, set up to tackle rural crime, also worked to seize cash, vehicles and kerosene oil across the border region.

Gardai from the Sligo and Leitrim division seized suspected heroin worth more than 61-thousand euro, and almost 8-thousand euro worth of cocaine and cannabis in two separate locations in Co. Sligo.

In Donegal, the District Drugs Unit supported by Customs recovered a quantity of suspected to be cocaine and cannabis following a search of a property in the Buncrana district. Gardaí in Letterkenny focused on street dealing in the town with a number of detections made in respect of possession of illegal drugs for personal use.

Irish Cancer Society Research Head says LUH projects are very important

The Irish Cancer Society’s Head of Research says two projects being supported at Letterkenny University Hospital will have long term benefits for people being treated for cancer, and also those whose treatment has finished.

Dr Robert O’Connor was speaking ahead of a public conference in Letterkenny this weekend being organised by Donegal Relay for Life with the theme ‘You are not alone’.

Dr O’Connor says it’s a very important theme as we exit the pandemic, and the work being done in Letterkenny can help address the isolation that many cancer patients and survivors feel……….

Three cars stolen from Letterkenny garage

Three cars have been taken from a commercial garage in Ballyraine, Letterkenny during an overnight break in, with a garda investigation now underway.

One of them was later found crashed across the border.

Garda appeal in full –

Gardaí in Letterkenny are investigating a burglary that happened between 8pm yesterday, Monday February 21st and 2am this morning, Tuesday February 22nd at a garage on the Middle Rd, Ballyraine, Letterkenny.

 

Steel doors were forced open at the side of the property and entry was gained. Three vehicles were stolen from the property, a silver VW Passat reg no. 151DL4501, a red Toyota Auris, reg no. 10DL16255 and a blue Ford Fiesta ,reg no. 10DL16254. The blue Fiesta has been located crashed across the border.

 

A number of sets of car keys were also stolen from the property during the course of the burglary. We are appealing to anybody who was in that area and who may have noticed any suspicious activity to contact Gardaí in Letterkenny.

Letterkenny gardai probe Lower Main Street assault

Gardaí in Letterkenny are investigating a serious assault in the Lower Main Street area in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Gardai are particularly anxious to trace a dark coloured saloon car which was in the area at the time.

Gardai say the incident happened at approximately 2.18am on Sunday morning.

The injured man was assaulted on the left side of Lower Main Street as you head towards Oldtown Road. He was subsequently hospitalised for treatment, but his injuries are not believed to be life threatening.

Gardai say they are investigating all of the circumstances surrounding the incident and CCTV is being examined from various premises, and are appealing to anybody who may have observed the assault occur to contact Gardaí.

Gardai are asking taxi drivers and others who may have dash cam footage from the area to make it available to them, and in particular, they say they are interested in hearing about any sightings or dashcam footage of an Irish registration dark coloured saloon style car that was at the location at the time of the incident.

Donegal County Council to consider setting up Mica helpline

Donegal County Council is to look at establishing a helpline for people whose homes are affected by Mica, as well as advice centres in three of the county’s five municipal districts.

An emergency motion signed by a representative cross party group of 12 members was moved at yesterday’s reconvened council meeting by Cllr Gary Doherty.

He says the damage caused by Storm Franklin at the weekend shows the perilous condition in which many people are living…………

Consultation on new Letterkenny plan deferred pending OPW discussions

A decision on the Letterkenny Development Plan has been deferred until the March meeting.

During what was a lengthy debate, members of the Letterkenny MD claimed officials had not been listening to their priorities.

At one point, Cllr Patrick McGowan suggested other areas are suffering because planners are focussed on Letterkenny.

Cllr John O’Donnell says he understands that perspective, but it’s vital that the council get the Letterkenny plan right………………
