New initiatives to support remote working

The Government’s announcing a number of new initiatives to support remote working.

The Government’s already re-purposed buildings like old train stations and cinemas into remote working hubs.

A new mobile app is being launched today to allow people to book work spaces in their local hubs, while a new 5 million euro fund will be available for further investment to increase capacity and provide better facilities.

Minister Heather Humphreys says a new information campaign is also being launched so that people know what’s available to them.

Third time lucky for delayed Council meeting?

The Cathaoirleach of Donegal County Council says he is confident that today’s delayed meeting of the council will go ahead as planned at the third attempt.

The meeting was originally scheduled for the 31st of January – but numerous disruptions paused both meetings, meaning that none of the planned business could be discussed.

Cllr Frank McBrearty was suspended from all council activity and it’s understood Donegal County Council has pursued a legal injunction against the Councillor, to prevent him attending today’s meeting.

Cathaoirleach Cllr Jack Murray says he expects the meeting will go ahead without delay today:

Fees to release wheel clamps to increase

It’s going to cost 56% more to release clamps from illegally parked vehicles.

The Department of Transport has confirmed that release fees for cars clamped on public roads are to rise from 80 to 125 euro from March 1st.

According to the Irish Independent, the price rise is the first in 24 years.

It quotes a department spokesperson as saying the price rise will bring the fees in line with the maximum allowed by the National Transport Authority for private clampers, and is designed to “prevent any impression” that parking in clamping zones on public roads is less serious than elsewhere.

Floating water pipe leading to Gola branded “ridiculous”

A local Councillor says that the issue of a floating water pipe leading to Gola Island is “ridiculous”, after a boat struck the pipe over the weekend.

It’s believed a ferry struck the exposed water pipe on Saturday, which stretches for several hundred metres on the surface of the water.

No injuries or substantial damage were reported, but it is the latest in a long line of near misses involving the pipeline.

Cllr Michael Cholm Mac Giolla Easbuig says that this issue has been ongoing for several years – and despite approval being granted for works to be carried out in April of last year, nothing has yet been done…
