Funding granted to Milford & District Resource Centre

 

Funding of almost €150,000 has been allocated to the Milford & District Resource Centre, to provide a new youth development project as well as establishing a youth officer.

The funding, provided by the International Fund for Ireland will develop the Mulroy Youth Engagement Project which helps young people in education and getting employment.

Manager of the Milford & District Resource Centre, Declan Meehan, says this programme will address the long-standing lack of youth services in the Milford area:

The points in the first north west derby went the way of Sligo Rovers as Finn Harps went down at the Showgrounds 3-1.

A Aiden Kenna hat-trick gave the hosts the victory despite a spirited Harps performance who only found the net once through second half substitute Luke Rodden.

The result leaves the Ballybofey side rooted to the bottom of the table with UCD on two points, they are the only sides not to take a win in the opening series of matches to date.

Good night for Derry but concerns over Michael Duffy – Ruaidhri Higgins

Derry City sit just a point of the new Premier Division leaders St Patrick’s Athletic following their 2-0 win on Monday evening at the Brandywell over Drogheda United.

Jamie McGonigle scored both goals as Derry remain unbeaten ahead of their top of the table clash with Pats on Friday.

Despite the good result there is concern over Michael Duffy who came on in the 61st minute but have to be helped off the pitch within ten minutes after taking a knock.

Donegal clubwoman wins Translink Ulster GAA Coach of the Year award

Johanne McColgan, a coach from Inishowen-based club Naomh Padraig Uisce Chaoin, is the Translink Ulster GAA Coach of the Year for 2022.

This is the fourth time that Translink and Ulster GAA have partnered on the initiative, which is designed to recognise club coaches who demonstrate exceptional commitment to the coaching and development of Gaelic games.

A huge number of public nominations were submitted from across Ulster, after which a panel of experts including Down Manager, James McCartan, Irish News Sports Correspondent, Neil Loughran and Ulster GAA’s Director of Coaching & Games, Eugene Young, selected one finalist from each county in the province. Over 6,000 votes were cast in an online poll to select the overall winner.

As well as the title of Coach of the Year, Johanne also wins commemorative kit and free coach travel for her team.

Presenting Johanne with her award Rosanna Jack, Assistant Service Delivery Manager at Translink, said:

“On behalf of Translink, I’d like to congratulate all of the finalists who have each been outstanding ambassadors for their own counties. The standard of nominations was extremely high, so to be selected as a county winner is a tremendous achievement for each coach and their club.

“Particular praise must go to Johanne, who is a very worthy overall winner. Johanne has been a committed coach and promoter of Gaelic games at her club and school for many years, dedicating countless hours. Her efforts have been recognised by members of her club who praised her high level of communication skills with the children, which helps to keep them engaged and to enjoy taking part.

Ciaran McLaughlin, Ulster GAA President added:

“We congratulate Johanne on being voted a very worthy winner of our Translink Coach of the Year initiative and wish the Naomh Padraig club many safe travels this incoming season as they enjoy their prize of free coach travel.

“On behalf of Ulster GAA, I applaud the great work and commitment of all nine of our county winners within their clubs. There were thousands of public votes received over the last few weeks and this demonstrates the strength of club support and community spirit across the GAA in Ulster.”

Security alert in Derry continuing this evening

Police say a security alert in the Fahan Road area of Derry city is continuing this evening.

The alert was put in place and the area cordoned off, after reports of numerous suspicious items were made to police at 11 o’clock this morning.

13 properties have also been evacuated as a result of the alert, with any displaced people being taken to a rest centre at Brooke Park Leisure Centre.

The security cordon has also been extended to include a section of the city’s walls.

Derry City and Strabane Area Commander, Chief Superintendent Ryan Henderson said: “First of all, I want to thank the local community for their patience and understanding during the course of this protracted security operation, in particular every resident who has been affected.

“Our primary aim throughout the course of this operation is to keep our community safe. However, I understand the security operation has caused, and continues to cause significant disruption, but it is required in order to keep people safe.

“We will endeavour to work through this situation as quickly as we can and get people back into their homes, but everyone’s safety is our top priority and we will not take any risks with that.”

9,371 new ROI Covid-19 cases, over 1,000 in hospitals nationally

A total of 9,371 new cases of Covid-19 have been confirmed in the Republic of Ireland this afternoon.

2,100 were confirmed via PCR test, with 7,271 positive antigen tests also registered.

Figures for the weekend have also been released today, which stand at 11,253 for Saturday and 11,266 for Sunday.

These case figures come as the number of patients in the country’s hospitals with Covid-19 surpassed 1,000 for the first time since January – with latest HSE data saying that 1,042 patients are now hospitalised with the virus, 42 of which in Intensive Care Units.
