Glenmaquin NS extension moves a step closer

The delivery of an extension for Glenmaquin National School in Letterkenny has moved a step closer.

Under the Additional School Accommodation Scheme, the green light has been given to proceed to tender stage.

The works will include one new classroom.

In welcoming the confirmation, Minister Charlie McConalogue says the progress is good news for the local community.

He’s congratulated thestudents, parents, staff and principal for all their hard work and for getting this project moving.

Donegal County Council continuing to monitor the weather as more storms are forecast

Donegal County Council’s Director of Emergency Services is urging people to continue to exercise extreme caution and has warned that we are not out of the woods yet.

Parts of the county have been severely impacted with snow from Storm Eunice while other areas have experienced minor falls.

More adverse weather is expected, with status yellow warnings extended until 10am tomorrow, and further yellow wind warnings into Sunday.

The Council is continuing to monitor the evolving weather situation.

8,593 new Covid cases as Taoiseach confirms mask rules will change on February 28th

8,593 new cases of Covid 19 have been confirmed this afternoon, 4,821 through PCR tests and 3,772 through positive antigen tests recorded yesterday on the HSE portal.

As of 8am today, 591 COVID-19 patients are hospitalised, of whom 57 are in ICU.

Latest figures for Letterkenny University Hospital show 22 infected patients, one of them in ICU.

Meanwhile, Face-masks will no longer be required by law after February 28th.

The Taoiseach has confirmed the government will be accepting NPHET’s advice in relation to mask-wearing.

Health officials recommended they no longer be mandatory in any environments, except healthcare.

Derry and Strabane ranked one of the top European cities of the future

The Derry City and Strabane District City region has been ranked one of the top European cities of the future.

According to a study carried out by the FDI Intelligence Division of the Financial Times the region has been listed second in the FDI European Cities of the Future 2022.

Mayor of Derry City and Strabane District Council Alderman Warke said the ranking was hugely significant and puts the city and district on a positive footing as it progresses to the next stages of delivering the exciting and innovative City Deal projects.

He said it puts the city and region on the map in terms of gaining recognition from world leading investors and helps increase the city and region’s visibility across the Financial Times Group global readership and audience, which in turn he says will encourage further funding and investment.

The Derry City and Strabane District City Region ranked second in the European Cities of the Future Category, tipped only by Doncaster and Sheffield City Region and overseeing competition from other European cities such as Cork, Middlesbrough and Dublin.

As part of the evaluation process, judges assessing the application took account of the area’s economic potential, cost effectiveness, connectivity, human capital and lifestyle and business friendliness.

Severe weather conditions leads to calls for better phone coverage in Donegal

Today’s weather conditions have led to calls for better mobile phone coverage across Donegal.

Early this morning, five vehicles became stuck on the Glenveigh road and due to a lack of mobile phone coverage they were unable to seek help.

West Donegal Councillor Michael McClafferty says this morning’s incident is evidence of the vital need for better communication infrastructure in the county.

He says there is always ways and means to deliver if the will is there:

Man killed by falling tree in Co Wexford

A man has died after being fatally injured as a result of a falling tree in Co Wexford.

Gardaí and emergency services attended the scene this morning, in the Ballythomas area.

It is understood that a man, aged in his 60s, was injured and  later pronounced dead at the scene.

The body of the man will be removed to Waterford University Hospital where a post-mortem will take place in due course.

The Health Safety Authority (HSA) have been notified and are due to attend the scene.

Drugs seized in Buncrana area following cross border operation

A quantity of cocaine and cannabis have been seized in the Buncrana area following a number of searches.

Yesterday, a planned cross border operation to tackle rural crime was conducted in the Buncrana district.

A number of vehicles were subsequently seized by customs while a number of road traffic offences were detected by Gardaí.

In addition, a driver was arrested on suspicion of drug driving after testing positive for the presence of cocaine and cannabis.

Searches were also conducted throughout the Buncrana area under the Misuse of Drugs Act and as a result a quantity of cocaine and cannabis was seized.

Early Childhood Ireland highlights need for investment as survey shows significfant NW support

Early Childhood Ireland says the pandemic has focussed peoples’ minds on the importance of education for children under 5, and they want that reflected in government investment in the sector.

The body has just published its annual barometer of opinion, with 79% of people in the North West saying they believe that young children have a right to early years care and education

That figure is 18% up on last year, with CEO Teresa Heeney saying Early Childhood Care and Education has traditionally been underfunded, and people that needs to change………..
