Driving licence age requirements to change from Monday

The age of applicants who must supply a medical report to secure a driving licence will increase from 70 to 75 from Monday.

The requirement had been temporarily suspended during the Covid-19 pandemic to ease pressure on medical services.

However, those who have an identified illness will still be required to do so by law.

Driving licences will remain free for those aged 70 or over.

The Road Safety Authority expects approximately 15,000 licence applications per month from over 70s between February and August.

Minister of State for Transport Hildegarde Naughton says it’s great news for Ireland’s elderly population:

Deputy Doherty questions if Justice Minister ‘knows what is happening in real world’

A Donegal Deputy has questioned if the Justice Minister knows what is happening in the real world.

Sinn Fein Finance Spokesperson Deputy Pearse Doherty has warned that the insurance crisis is having a significant impact on the economy and communities bouncing back from the pandemic.

He told that Dail that while insurance claim awards fell by 50% as a result of personal injuries guidelines coming into effect, insurers are not passing on such savings to consumers.

He pressed Minister Helen McEntee on when a re-balancing duty of care would come to fruition:

Watch: Dail hears of many false dawns for Mica homeowners

A Donegal Deputy has warned that there has been many false dawns for Mica homeowners in terms of a Redress scheme.

Despite the enhanced redress scheme being launched with much fanfare last year, affected homeowners have yet to access it with further delays being faced.

Tanaiste Leo Varadkar in recent weeks said he would be ‘extremely surprised’ if the scheme was not up and running by ‘the end of the year’.

Donegal Deputy Joe McHugh was speaking in the Dail last evening when discussing engagement with the SCSI on the defective blocks scheme.

He says deadlines cannot continue to be thrown out for them to be missed:

Residents in Derry and Strabane urged to be vigilant of suspicious callers

Police in Derry City and Strabane are urging residents to be vigilant after reports of suspicious callers to homes in the city this week.

They are appealing to people to report any suspicious activity.

Police received a report on Tuesday about a man calling to a home purporting to be from ‘The Water Board’. On Wednesday, it’s believed a man arrived at a property in the Adelaide Avenue area of Derry just before 1pm and offered to carry out work on the house. The man was reported to have spoken with what was described as a southern accent and was driving a white transit van.

Detective Sergeant Ballentine is urging people to report any suspicious activity of strangers offering unsolicited services or trying to gain access to homes.

Police say the sooner they are contacted, even if it is on the behalf of others, the better their chances are of catching a potential criminal.
