Momentum builds for Educate Together secondary school in Letterkenny

Momentum is said to be building around the idea of establishing an Educate Together secondary school in Letterkenny.

Currently, there is an Educate Together primary school in the town but it’s thought that there could be an appetite locally for pupils to have the option to progress to a similar school at second level.

A campaign group has been set up in a bid to gauge public interest further.

Mary Lane who is part of the campaign says they are keen to hear from interested parents:

Former member says Garda Reserve should be used much more

Garda management should be using the Garda Reserve more, particularly at community level.

That’s according to a former member of the Reserve, who spoke to Greg Hughes on the Nine til Noon Show today following calls yesterday from Cllr Albert Doherty for more gardai to address antisocial behaviour in Carndonagh.

Donal, who had to retire from the Reserve two years ago because of his age, says the numbers fell by more than 50% during his time with the service, and he can’t understand why the Commissioner and senior officers aren’t doing more to use this resource…………..

Facility under pressure to churn out more visitor numbers

The Minister for the OPW says the Corn & Flax Mills in Newmills will not be given any significant funding unless visitor numbers increase.

The OPW owned facility on the outskirts of Letterkenny is said to have huge tourism potential, with calls for it to be promoted better on a national stage.

A number of nearby buildings, also owned by the OPW have been lying vacant for a number of years.

Cathaoirleach of the Letterkenny Milford MD Cllr Jimmy Kavanagh says there needs to be a bigger push locally to get the numbers up and to ultimately pave the way for further investment:

Councillor seeks return of Udaras elections as public consultation gets underway

A Donegal County Councillor is urging people to take part in a public consultation on how the Board of Údarás na Gaeltachta should be selected.

The public and interested organisations are being invited to share their opinions and suggestions in writing with the Department in relation to the matter between now and 25 March 2022.

It’s hoped the process will be complete by July.

Cllr Michael Cholm Mac Giolla Easbuig says while this process is a step in the right direction, a return of an election would be better…………

Michael Murphy will not feature for Donegal this week in Kerry in the county’s third game of the Allianz league.

The Donegal Captain left the field in the first half of Donegal’s win over Kildare two weeks ago and wont be risked on Sunday in Killarney.

Jason McGee and Ciaran Thomspon could line out as the pair have been working through injuries in recent weeks but it will be a very much young and depleted Donegal team heading to the Kingdom.

Niall O’Donnell, Jamie Brennan, Oisin Gallen and Neil McGee will not feature either but their could be a return for Hugh McFadden and Daire O’Baoill.

Kerry v Donegal will be LIVE on Highland with Ryan Ferry & Martin McHugh this Sunday from 1.30pm in association with Highland Motors. Check out highlandmotors.ie.

‘Frustration’ over delays in planned school extension

The Parents Association at Moville Community College has expressed frustration over slow progress a long awaited extension at the school.

The building, which was first promised back in 2015, will effectively be separate to the existing school but will be linked with a walkway.

The main points of the build are to allow for an actual canteen with communal eating and sitting areas and to provide the students with changing rooms for PE – neither of these are properly available in the school to date.

The awaited building completion will also provide additional hall areas as well to enlarge all the regular existing facilities – effectively replace prefabs.

At present the Association says things are not as far ahead as they hoped, and progress has been slow.

It had been hoped that the full build would be finished, welcoming students in September 2021 however this deadline has passed, and the association says that there have been frustrating delays.

The Association says that a lot of this is unavoidable.

The main current points are:

* Grants: all funding is secure since 2015
* tree felling work completed last year
* Necessary Electrical Diversion work in progress

In June 2021 The Department of Education allowed the tender process to begin.

A lack of interest in the Tender concerning the Electrical Reserved Specialist required a second round of tendering in this area in 2022. This matter has now been resolved.

In about a week a new round of tenders can begin, for the Main Contract. The Main contractor could be appointed by Sept 2022.

Government accused of refusing to hear opposition statements

A Donegal Deputy has accused the Taoiseach of refusing to hear statements from opposition parties in the Dail.

Deputy Padraig MacLochlainn claims for two weeks in a row Government has refused to hear any statements requested by those in the opposition.

He says this is despite Micheal Martin previously committing to two debates on reports from the North’s Ombudsman.

Deputy MacLochlainn is calling for the statements from the opposition to be reinstated:

Transport in Ireland is ‘system of inequality’

The Dail has been told that the transport system in Ireland is a system of inequality, and immediate action is needed to replace services and allowances which have been scaled down, or are no longer available.

Deputy Thomas Pringle was speaking during a debate on mobility and transport supports for people with disabilities.

He said people with disabilities should be able to live a full and independent life and they should be given the same opportunities as everyone else to be fully active in their communities:
