Penalties considered for tampering with lifesaving equipment

Hefty penalties could be on the way for anyone found to be interfering with defibrillators or life buoys.

The Seanad will today debate the Life Saving Equipment Bill 2017, as part of its journey through the Oireachtas.

It would impose a maximum five year sentence, a 50,000 euro fine or both for anyone convicted.

Senator Robbie Gallagher, who’s sponsoring the bill, says the acts of vandalism need to be stamped out:

NEPHT to meet over mask rules

The National Public Health Emergency Team will meet today to consider lifting the legal requirement for facemasks to be worn in certain settings.

They may no longer be required in shops, on public transport or in schools.

NPHET will meet later to consider ending the mask mandate which had been due to run until February 28th.

In political circles it’s expected the advice will be to lift the legal requirement, instead leaving it up to each person whether they want to wear a mask in public settings or not.

Taoiseach Micheál Martin told his parliamentary party last night a distinction may be drawn between law and advice.

Teaching unions say they’re cautious, and serious consideration needs to be given to retaining safety measures in schools.

Education Minister Norma Foley said she will act on NPHET advice immediately, but that it would have to go to Cabinet.

Taoiseach Micheál Martin will travel to Brussels for an EU – Africa summit today, making the timeline for any decision unclear.

Access to Covid vaccines and the waiver of patents is expected to be among the biggest issues on the conference agenda.

The strength of sterling and interest from Northern Ireland, could be contributing to high house prices in the border region.

That’s according to the Institute of Professional Auctioneers and Valuers.

It comes as CSO figures show residential property prices nationally went up by 14.4 per cent in 2021.

However, homes near the border saw increases of up to 23.7 per cent.

IPAV Chief Executive Pat Davitt says interest from North of the border could be adding to price pressures:

Taoiseach pressed to investigate HSE management in the North West

The Taoiseach has been pressed to ensure an investigation into HSE management in the North West is carried out.

Donegal Deputy Thomas Pringle called on Micheal Martin in the Dail today to investigate what he’s described as “ongoing patterns of failure” in residential centres in the region.

It comes following details contained in the Brandon report relating to incidents of sexual abuse in Ard Greine Court and the Sean O’Hare Unit, Stranorlar and as it emerged yesterday that HIQA had expressed concerns over the HSE’s fitness as a provider of centres for people with disabilities in Donegal and the North West.

Deputy Pringle says not only is an investigation needed into HSE management in CHO1 but nationally also.

He says there needs to be a change in management:
