Council urge public to take care with severe weather on the way

Donegal County Council is urging people to take extra care over the next few days on foot of severe weather warnings issued by Met Éireann.

Storm Dudley is to hit the North West tomorrow will Storm Eunice is expected to bring further disruption on Friday.

An Orange wind warning is in place for Donegal tomorrow, as Storm Dudley is expected to bring damaging wind gusts of around 130km/h along exposed coasts.

Dangerous conditions are also expected at sea as strong winds in combination with high tides will lead to large coastal waves and some coastal flooding.

A status Orange Marine warning is in place as westerly winds may reach storm force 10 on coastal waters.

Motorists are being asked to take extra care while driving with the potential for localised spot flooding.

Donegal County Council’s Severe Weather Assessment Team are keeping the approaching weather pattern under review and will continue to monitor all local conditions as Storm Dudley and Storm Eunice progresses.

All Council services remain in a state of readiness.

Taoiseach told people cannot wait until Budget to tackle cost of living

The Taoiseach has been told that people cannot afford to wait until the Budget for additional measures to tackle the cost of living.

Sinn Fein Leader Mary Lou McDonald has accused Michael Martin of showing no urgency and ‘dithering’ when it comes to addressing the issue.

The party says the package announced by Government last week is not enough.

The Taoiseach has confirmed there are no plans for any additional measures to tackle the rising cost of living this side of the budget.

Break in at Letterkenny Tennis Club

Gardaí are investigating a burglary at the Tennis Club in Letterkenny.

The premises was broken into between 6pm on Sunday evening last and 10 o’clock yesterday morning.

Entry was gained through a smashed window, and a small sum of cash was stolen.

Gardai are urging anyone who may have observed any suspicious activity in or around the tennis club between those times to contact them on 074-9167100.

Letterkenny-Lifford road to close this evening to facilitate lorry removal

The main Letterkenny to Lifford road will be closed this evening at Mondooey Lower to facilitate the removal of a lorry.

The lorry went off the road earlier today.

The road will be closed from approx. 6pm to 9pm this evening at the Drumoghill to Galdonagh Junction with diversions in place via Galdonagh and Drumoghill.

All HGVs are advised to divert via the N14.

Contract signed to upgrade Killybegs water treatment plant

A construction contract has been signed to upgrade the Killybegs Water Treatment Plant.

Irish Water is investing €13 million in the project which will support economic, social development and tourism in the area while reducing the risk of supply interruptions and ensuring compliance with EU Drinking Water Regulations.

The works being carried out by EPS are expected to commence in the coming months and will take approximately 24 months to complete.

John McElwaine, Asset Delivery Regional Lead with Irish Water, says the project will involve an upgrade to the water treatment plant at the existing Killybegs site, as well as provision of sludge treatment facilities.

8,815 additional cases of Covid-19 confirmed

8,815 additional cases of Covid-19 have been confirmed today.

The Health Protection Surveillance Centre has been notified of 4,160 PCR-confirmed cases of COVID-19.

In addition, 4,655 people registered a positive antigen test through the HSE portal.

As of 8am today, 635 patients with the virus are hospitalised, of whom 63 are in ICU.

Midlands NW MEP believes Ireland could benefit from offshore wind resources

Offshore renewable energy production must be deployed more rapidly if the EU is to meet its climate neutral goals over the next thirty years.

That’s a key finding of a European Parliament report which MEPs are voting on today.

According to the report, the cost of developing offshore wind energy has fallen dramatically over the last two decades and it is now one of the most competitive sources of energy.

Emergency services at scene of crash outside Lifford

An earlier crash on the main Letterkenny to Lifford road just outside Lifford is causing delays.

Gardaí and emergency services attended the scene of the collision involving a lorry that occurred at around 12:45pm.

Gardai say no injuries were reported.

Local diversions were in place as the incident was dealt with.

Tyrone players to serve one game bans

Padraig Hampsey was one of four Tyrone players sent off at the Athletic Grounds

The four Tyrone players who were sent off in the recent Allianz League match against Armagh had their appeals heard at a Croke Park hearing on Monday night and all four will serve a one match ban.

Tyrone captain Padraig Hampsey along with Michael McKernan, Peter Harte and Kieran McGeary were sent off late on by referee David Gough at the Athletic Grounds last Sunday week along with Armagh’s Greg McCabe.

The four Tyrone players in question will miss this Sunday’s game at home to Kildare as the All Ireland champions chase a first league win of the year.

Gardai investigate car crime in Letterkenny and Buncrana

Gardaí in Letterkenny are investigating the theft of a car from a house at An Gleann Rua, Letterkenny on Saturday night last.

The car, a white BMW registration number 11 DL 7441 was taken between Twenty past Ten on Saturday night and Twenty past One on Sunday morning.

It was later found on fire in the Kirkstown area.

Gardai in Letterkenny are appealing to anyone who may have noticed any suspicious activity in the area of An Gleann Rua or Kirkstown to contact them, particularly if they saw the car or have dashcam footage.

In Buncrana, Gardaí are investigating a number of criminal damage incidents in the Lisowen Avenue area on Sunday February 6th between 7.50pm and 8.30pm, in which a number of cars were damaged when attempts were made to steal badges from them. One of the cars in question had its badge taken.The station can be contacted at 074 93 20540.

Gardai say they are anxious to speak to anybody who observed two youths in the area around the time.

Meanwhile, this morning in Letterkenny between 5.00 and 5.10, a man was observed kicking the rear of a car at a house in Glencar Irish, causing damage to the car.
