Record €5.64m sports capital and equipment funding for Donegal

A record €5.64m in funding has been announced for Donegal under the Sports Capital & Equipment Programme.

The funding will go towards numerous improvements to over 80 groups in the county including the development of clubhouse facilities, new dressing rooms and flood lighting.

Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine Charlie McConalogue, says the funding is testament to the success of sports in our County and the hard-work of all the staff, volunteers and participants of the clubs.

He says it will help to boost local communities in supporting a wide range of clubs from the scouts group in Carndonagh to rugby, GAA and soccer clubs right throughout the County.

Open Call for Cruinniú na nÓg event applicants

€30,000 is being made available for Donegal this year as part of Cruinniú na nÓg.

The national day of creativity for children and young people 11th June and aims to celebrate and encourage children and young people’s participation in culture and creativity by providing free, activity-based action in their own locality.

Donegal County Council’s Culture and Creativity Team have issued an open call for proposals from practitioners, community groups and organisations for creative events and activities that will provide opportunities for children and young people to make the day.

Applicants are asked to consider suggestions from children and young people across Donegal, which can be found www.wainfest.ie

Marine Minister meets with DCC Fisheries Committee

Agriculture and Marine Minister Charlie McConalogue met this morning with Donegal County Council’s Fisheries Committee.

Minister McConalogue discussed the Seafood Sector Taskforce report, and said there is an emphasis on ensuring that the economic of the Irish catch is maximised through investment in processing.

He said there was significant input from the county in coming up with the report’s, recommendations, including a substantial decommissioning scheme which is being implemented.

Feels Housing Dept has vendetta against Mica homeowners – MAG PRO

It almost feels as though the Housing Department has a vendetta against Mica homeowners.

That’s according to the PRO of the Mica Action Group who has warned the patience of affected homeowners is wearing very thin and he believes the Department is intent on passing a redress scheme that comes at a significant cost to the homeowners.

Michael Doherty wrote to Housing Minister Darragh O’Brien earlier this week raising a number of issues. He says the Ministerial response was disappointing but not surprising.

Need highlighted for additional Housing Maintenance Section staff

There are calls for additional staff to be put in place in the Housing Maintenance Section in the Letterkenny Milford area.

It’s in response to what’s been described as an ever increasing demand in the workload.

Cllr Donal Coyle says in particular, Council owned dwellings in the Manorcunningham area are not being given enough attention with regards to maintenance.

Cllr Coyle says while the current team are doing the best they can, it is effectively down to a need for more personnel:

First governing body of new Atlantic Technological University announced

The members of the first governing body of the new Atlantic Technological University which will open its doors on April 1st have been announced today by Higher Education Minister Simon Harris.

It follows the granting of Technological University status to a consortium comprising Letterkenny, Galway-Mayo, and Sligo Institutes of Technology.

Leitrim Barrister Maura McNally has been appointed as the chair of the governing body, supported by Leitrim based businesswoman Oonagh Monahan and Sligo Based businessman Felim McNeela as external members.

Meanwhile, Anne McHugh, Chief Executive of Donegal ETB, is the nominee of all three Education and Training boards in whose areas the TU multi-campuses are located.

Further concern over spate of burglaries in North West

A South Donegal Deputy says he’s ‘hugely’ concerned over the spate of burglaries in the North West.

The Tanaiste Leo Varadkar’s promised to raise the issue of an armed support unit for Sligo with the Justice Minister.

It comes as 73 year-old Tom Niland is fighting for his life after he was attacked in Skreen, County Sligo last month.

Liz Truss is meeting the European Commission vice-president later – aiming to resolve the deadlock over post-Brexit trading arrangements.

Northern Ireland’s first minister quit last week over the rules, which he argues are a barrier to the movement of goods from Britain.
