Calls for funding for Rathmullan and Portsalon piers to be prioritised

Donegal County Council is being urged to prioritise both Rathmullan and Portsalon Piers in future funding opportunities.

There’s said to be a huge demand for both piers but there is concern over the current state of the infrastructure in the two areas.

A funding opportunity is available through the newly announced Brexit reserve fund for medium sized piers and harbours and the local authority only have to provide 15% of the overall cost.

Cllr Liam Blaney says if the Council act now, it’ll prevent a larger cost down the line:

Package to reduce cost of living unveiled

The Public Expenditure Minister has insisted fare cuts for public transport are only until the end of this year.

The 20% discount was confirmed as part of a package to reduce the cost of living.

Around €300 million of new spending was confirmed yesterday with the Government saying the total package when the budget is taken into account is now €1.5 billion.

The ‘one for everyone in the audience’ element is the energy credit that was previously announced – except now instead of €100 off energy bills people will get €200, likely paid in April.

A once off €125 lump sum is also being paid to everyone in receipt of the fuel allowance, to be paid around Paddy’s Day.

There were also moves to make school transport cheaper, lower the contribution to the drug payment scheme and increase the working family payment.

While people who drive will see nothing on their petrol and diesel bills, there will be 20% off public transport fares

That’s likely to kick in at the end of April.

The Greens are claiming it as a big win – but Minister for Public Expenditure Michael McGrath says it’s only until the end of the year pending a review of state backed transport.

But the first shots in a campaign for free public transport have been fired.

Dail told families want Brandon report published

The Dail has heard that the families involved in the Brandon Report want it published.

Deputy Thomas Pringle was speaking as part of statements on the Health (Miscellaneous Provisions) Bill 2022 which would pave the way for a transfer of some responsibilities to a different Minister.

Deputy Pringle raised concerns once again over the HSE’s handling of the Brandon report, which detailed incidents of sexual abuse at Ard na Gréine and St. Joseph’s Community Hospital in Stranorlar.

Giving a cautious approach to the Bill, Deputy Pringle says HSE accountability must be addressed in the first instance:

Marine Minister and Donegal Deputy clash over Rockall access

The Marine Minister has clashed in the Dail with Sinn Fein’s Fisheries and Marine spokesperson, Donegal Deputy Padraig MacLochalinn.

Deputy MacLochlainn raised the issue of access around Rockall being blocked for Irish fishermen.

He told the Dail that it has resulted in a loss of over €7 million to the sector last year.

Deputy MacLochlainn hit out at what he says is a lack of passion and outrage from Government on the matter.

In response, Minister Charlie McConalogue accused Deputy MacLochlainn of himself not realising the real challenges and facts when alluding to a previous debate on Rockall:

Trawler captain fined €15,000

The Sea Fisheries Protection Agency says that where no-compliance is found, action will be taken.

It comes after fines of €15,000 were imposed by Judge John Aylomer on the Master of the Maggie C fishing vessel, at Letterkenny Circuit Court this week.

At a previous sitting of the court, the Master of the Maggie C had pleaded guilty to fishing offenses, including the failure to accurately record catches in the logbook while at sea.

The value of the catch and gear, worth of €18,000, was also forfeited. The vessel had been detained following an inspection at sea by the Naval Service on October 13th, 2015, and was subsequently brought to Killybegs harbour.

Commenting on the verdict, Paschal Hayes, Executive Chairperson of the SFPA said the accurate recording of catches in logbooks is a critical element of effective quota management and is an important part of ensuring the sustainability of our marine resources.

Most operators adhere to the requirements of the EU Common Fisheries Policy he added, and the SFPA is committed to detecting those who choose not to comply.

He concluded they will identify activity and vessels that pose a higher risk, and where non-compliance is found, the appropriate action will be taken.
