Enter online for North West 10k

Online entries have now opened for the North West 10k which will celebrate its 25th anniversary when the charity run and walk takes place on Monday 2nd of May in Letterkenny. Plans to mark that milestone are ongoing including a special commemorative t-shirt for all who enter before the 31st of March. North West 10k Chairperson Neil Martin says it’s going to be a very special event for the past and present committees who have helped raise €833,000 for over 30 charities since the first race was held on the 10th of May 1997.

“Yes there is lots of work going on at the moment because we want to make this a very special event to mark the 25th running of the North West 10k. We still have some members of the first committee very much involved in organising this one for May 2nd which is the Bank Holiday Monday. That is a new date for us and the start time is new as well at 11 am. We will be giving a commemorative t-shirt to all who enter before the 31st of March. We have a link setup for the online entries so I would encourage runners and walkers to enter early and get that 25th anniversary t-shirt” Mr Martin said.

Three charities who will benefit from the 2022 North West 10k Charity Run & Walk are Spina Bifida & Hydrocephalus Ireland Donegal Branch, the Donegal Diabetes Parents Support Group and the No Barriers Foundation. The online entry fee is €15.

The 25th North West 10k takes place on Monday 2nd of May in Letterkenny at 11 a.m. To enter online clink on this link https://www.njuko.net/nw_10k_2022

The LYIT will be stepping up to the CUFL Premier Division next year having reach this season’s Division 1 League Final.

They will play Dundalk IT in the decider in a number of weeks time but they had to come from 2-0 down against TUS Midwest to force extra time and win their semi 4-2.

That win secured their place in the top flight of colleges football, something manager Shane Byrne has been trying to achieve with the college during his nine year tenure as boss.

Speaking with Oisin Kelly, Shane says it’s taken a huge effort by the group to get promotion  but there’s still lots to play for in the coming weeks:

Record number attending emergency departments

A record number of people are attending emergency departments.

The HSE says the effects of a tough winter are evident in the state of our health services.

Hospitals are seeing record attendance levels, with almost 28,000 attending Emergency Departments this week alone.

Of those, almost 7,000 people were admitted, which shows an increase of 23.8 per cent on the same week last year.

There has been an average of 333 people on trolleys each day this week, a 203 per cent increase on the same week last year.

A large proportion of those admitted are over the age of 75, resulting in longer stays and community supports when discharged.

Covid-19 continues to have an impact on services, with 595 Covid patients in acute settings this morning.

Over half of all nursing homes are reported to have a Covid-19 outbreak, which is causing delays to nursing home residents being discharged from hospital.

The HSE is encouraging anyone facing an emergency to go to an Emergency Department, but are asking those who don’t require urgent care to refrain.

The full diagnosis of Michael Murphy’s injury is still to be confirmed but it looks like the Donegal Captain will be out of action for a several weeks.

Donegal Manager Declan Bonner has told the Donegal News and Donegal Democrat that Murphy will spend some time on the sides lines and he will not be rush back.

He picked up the injury in the first half of last Sunday’s win over Kildare a victory which has Donegal with three points from their opening two games.

Donegal return to action on Sunday week in Kerry with hopes that Ciaran Thompson, Jason McGee, Hugh McFadden and Daire O’Baoil could be available.

That game in Killarney may come too soon for Jamie Brennan and Oisin Gallen who remain on the treatment table.

Tanaiste urged to clarify ‘worrying report’ for Mica homeowners

The Dail has been told that the publication this week of the Terms of Reference published this week for the forthcoming report of the Society of Chartered Surveyors in Ireland is causing serious concerns in Donegal.

The SCSI’s figures will determine payments to homeowners under the Defective Blocks Scheme, but Deputy Pearse Doherty told Tanaiste Leo Varadkar this afternoon that there are issues with the terms of reference, particularly because there are indications that foundations will not be included.

He says this is contrary to promises made by Minister Charlie McConalogue that they would be, and urged the Tanaiste to clarify the situation:
