Sligo Rovers take stand on sponsorship

Sligo Rovers say they will no longer be accepting sponsorships from gambling companies.

They say such deals could have a detrimental effect on their fanbase.

Sligo say they’ve recently turned down two large sponsorship offers from gambling companies.

Elsewhere Shamrock Rovers have welcomed the decision to overturn the stadium ban imposed for fan disorder.

Their opening game of the season was set to be played behind closed doors, due to some of their fans setting off fireworks last season at the RSC.

Instead, the Hoops fine has been increased to 5-thousand euro and fans can attend next Friday’s game with UCD.

Concern over ‘scaling back of services’ at LUH

The Taoiseach says it’s the Government objective to provide adequate resources to Letterkenny University Hospital.

Michael Martin was responding to concerns over what has been described as a scaling back of services at the hospital.

In the Dail, Deputy Thomas Pringle made particular reference to the backlog in eye appointments and treatment at Letterkenny which he previously highlighted on Highland Radio last week.

The Taoiseach says the hospital is a key facility for the North West and will be relaying the matter with the Health Minister:

Pet restrictions on Donegal’s Blue Flag beaches

If Donegal is to retain Blue Flag status on its beaches, Donegal County Council has to comply with new criteria set out by An Taisce.

As a result, new rules are coming into force which include restricting access for dogs and other pets, other than assistance dogs, to blue-flag beaches or in the blue-flag area if it is part of a larger beach.

The rule applies during the Bathing Season only.

Donegal currently has the joint highest number of Blue Flags nationally with 12 beaches in the county holding the award.

Pets will be restricted from accessing a portion of the beaches in question from 11am to 7pm each day from 1st June to 15th September.

This will include supervision by beach lifeguards plus a buffer either side.

The beaches where these restrictions will apply are Rossnowlagh, Murvagh, Fintra, Portnoo/Narin, Carrickfinn, Killahoey, Marblehill, Downings, Portsalon, Rathmullan, Lisfannan and Culdaff.

Given the size of 2 of the smaller beaches, Bundoran and Stroove, there is not sufficient space to fulfil compliance with the Blue Flag criteria and also allow for an additional area for pet access.

Donegal County Council will implement these measures for the 2022 Bathing Season.

Highland Radio to host special broadcast as part of Islington Irish Month 2022

As part of an Islington Council month-long programme celebrating Irish heritgae, Highland Radio will be broadcasting live from Islington on Saturday March 19th.

To celebrate an historic year in Islington’s history with our first Irish-born Mayor, Cllr Troy Gallagher, a native of Donegal, Islington Council has partnered with the London Irish Centre to showcase the best of Irish culture and heritage across the borough.

Marking an historic year for Islington and the Irish community, Mayor Troy Gallagher, originally from Letterkenny, concludes his term as the first Irish-born Mayor of Islington in 2022.

Islington Irish Month is a programme of events for all residents of Islington – those who have an Irish connection and those who don’t – to enjoy the diversity and richness of Irish culture and heritage.

As part of the celebrations Highland Radio will broadcast a special show live from Islington on Saturday March 19th with the Nine til Noon Show’s Greg Hughes.

Cllr Troy Gallagher, Mayor of Islington, said: “It is a great honour to be Mayor of Islington, and an even greater honour to be Islington’s first Irish-born Mayor. No-one can deny the important role that Irish people and Irish culture have played in Great Britain, and especially here in our part of North London.

“We want to create an opportunity to pay our respects to the Irish community and indeed to all communities across the borough with this fantastic programme of events. I’m very pleased that so much of the community is represented, with events for older people, children and families, schools and businesses in Islington.

“As Irish stereotypes go, we don’t mind being considered ‘great craic’ which is why I hope many people will come along and enjoy these events with their friends and families. I’m hoping we can all do our bit to fundraise for my chosen charities too – icap, James’ Place and forum+. Each of them does remarkable work, supporting people with their mental health, wellbeing and importantly, suicide prevention. You might be shocked to know that suicide is the biggest killer of men under 50, so it is absolutely vital that we help out these charities as much as possible.”

‘Shopping around’ not feasible for people in Donegal – Pringle

Donegal Deputy Thomas Pringle has supported a People Before Profit motion to increase the minimum wage to €15.

Speaking in the Dail earlier today, Deputy Pringle said the minimum wage must meet the rate of inflation.

He referenced comments made earlier this week by Junior Minister Sean Flemming who said people should ‘shop around’. Deputy Pringle said the words were insulting and almost inhumane to people who are genuinely struggling to make ends meet.

He told the Dail that for people in Donegal, ‘shopping around’ is simply not feasible:
