Taoiseach to travel to Washington DC this afternoon

 

The Taoiseach will travel to Washington DC this afternoon for a five day diplomatic trip to mark St Patrick’s Day.

Micheál Martin will meet President Joe Biden on Thursday and will meet cultural and business groups during the visit.

While the war in Ukraine will dominate discussions, issues like the undocumented Irish will also be raised.

Social Welfare recipients to get additional payment from today

Social Welfare recipients will see an additional payment in their weekly rate from this morning.

The government’s one off Fuel Allowance payment of 125 Euro comes into effect today, with up to 372,000 recipients.

However, Labour Party TD Duncan Smith feels the Government isn’t doing enough

Watch: Donegal GAA Chairman Mick McGrath on GPA’s request of media silence from County players

Donegal suffered their first home defeat of the season in the National Football League going down 1-12 to 0-10 against Monaghan on Sunday afternoon.

Before the game it was announced that the Donegal players and management will not be taking part in post match interviews after a request from the GPA, who are protesting the GAA’s “cost-savings on player expenses”.

Donegal GAA President Mick McGrath spoke to Tom Comack about the current situation as well as the defeat.

John Kelly sets new Ulster record in European Throws event in Portugal

John Kelly has set a new Donegal and Ulster Indoor and Outdoor Shot Put record at the European Throws event in Portugal.

The Donegal natives throw of 18.83 metres is also his lifetime best throw and helped him finish in fifth place at the event.

John’s brother James was also in action and threw 16.56 metres.

Gardaí investigating assault and robbery in Letterkenny

Gardaí say they’re investigating an assault and robbery that occurred in the early hours of Sunday in Letterkenny.

They say a man, aged in his fifties, was assaulted in the Longlane area of Letterkenny at approximately 4:50am, where he received non-life threatening injuries. Gardaí also believe a car was stolen in the course of the assault.

Gardaí say their enquiries into the attack are still ongoing.

Derry earn draw in Roscommon

Derry relinquished their lead at the top of Division Two following a 0-12 point a piece draw with Roscommon.

Galway are now top of the table thanks to a 2-08 to 1-05 win over Clare but both them and the Oakleaf County remain unbeaten.

Donegal were beaten in the Allianz National Football League Division One by  Monaghan in MacCumhaill Park.

It finished 1-12 to 0-10 in favour of the visitors.

Premier Division Review: Harps beaten by St Pat’s

Finn Harps suffered their first home defeat of the season on Friday night losing out 2-0 against St Pat’s.

Jack Scott opened the scoring for the Saints on 65 minutes before Eoin Doyle headed in the second to seal Tim Clancy’s sides win.

Elsewhere Sligo Rovers beat Drogheda United 3-0, Shamrock Rovers were 1-0 victors over Bohs and Dundalk and Shelbourne drew 1-1.
