Man accused of Ashling Murphy murder back in court today

The man accused of murdering Ashling Murphy is due back in court this morning.

Jozef Puska, with an address at Lynally Grove, Tullamore, Co Offaly, has been in custody since he was charged with the school teacher’s murder.

Ashling Murphy died after being attacked while out running along the grand canal in Tullamore on the afternoon of January 12th.

Jozef Puska was charged with her murder one week later and brought before a special sitting of Tullamore District Court that evening.

Through a video link into Cloverhill District Court in Dublin, the 31yo made his second court appearance a fortnight ago.

At that brief hearing, the judge was told the DPP’s directions were not yet available so he was remanded until today.

He’s due to appear before the same court later this morning, again through a live video link, when he’ll be given a further update on the status of his case.

Today marks a century of An Garda Síochána

An Garda Síochána has announced a number of national and local events to mark the centenary of the force.

Today marks 100 years since Michael Collins formed a committee to establish a police force for the 26 counties of Ireland.

The inaugural meeting, which took place at the Gresham Hotel in Dublin 100 years ago today, ultimately led to the creation of An Garda Síochána.

Michael Collins called the meeting, which was attended by Michael Staines TD who would go on to become the first Garda Commissioner.

A commemorative event, which was postponed due to Covid restrictions, is planned for the Gresham Hotel in May.

In August, a national commemorative event is due to take place, to remember the day Commissioner Staines led Gardai into Dublin Castle.

Other local exhibitions, on Garda history and heritage, are also due to take place around the country throughout the year.

Garda Commissioner, Drew Harris paid tribute to the 89 members of An Garda Síochána who’ve died in the past 100 years in the line of duty.

He said the organisation and force has adapted to serve the past and present needs of a national, unarmed police service, while striving to prevent and detect crime.

Letterkenny Hospital ED under pressure

The Emergency Department at Letterkenny University Hospital is very busy this evening.

Management say that there is on-going pressure on bed availability in the hospital and as a result patients are facing long delays being admitted from the Emergency Department to a bed on a ward.

There are currently 19 patients on trolleys in the Emergency Department waiting for a bed.

All available beds in the hospital are in use including an additional 20 escalation beds.

The hospital acknowledges that these delays are very difficult for patients and their families and apologises for the inconvenience and distress these delays cause.

People who are seriously injured or ill are assessed and treated as a priority and those who do not require urgent care may be waiting longer.

People are being urged to contact their GP during normal surgery hours or the NoWDOC GP out of hours service, in the first instance if their health problem is not an emergency.
