Lack of urgency on retrofitting scheme – Deputy Doherty

A new ‘deep retrofitting’ scheme to increase the energy efficiency of homes across the country will be signed off by Government Ministers this morning.

Cabinet will rubberstamp the plan which will see grants of more than 25 thousand euro made available for full retrofits, while up to 80% of the cost of smaller projects will also be covered.

Low interest Government loans will also be made available, while up to 400 energy upgrades a month will be carried for low income families free of charge.

It comes as Government continues to discuss what measures to take to combat rising living costs.

Donegal Deputy Pearse Doherty says there’s a lack of urgency on the issue:

Increase in reports of sexual offences in North

Police have reported an increase in reports of sexual offences in Northern Ireland last year.

They have, in part, attributed this to more victims’ having the confidence to come forward.

Sexual offences’ reporting in Northern Ireland has been steadily increasing over the past five years, with 3,864 incidents reported in 2021, an increase of 16% from the previous year.

As part of Sexual Abuse and Sexual Violence Awareness Week, the Police Service of Northern Ireland is highlighting the support that is available to victims and myth-busting some common misconceptions that can stop people from coming forward to report.

The service is also taking the opportunity to raise awareness of The Rowan, a specialist regional facility jointly funded by the Department of Health, Social Services and Public Safety (DHSSPS) and the Police Service of Northern Ireland.

Managed and run by the Northern Trust, it provides a range of services for anyone who has experienced sexual assault or rape.

Last year the centre supported 620 people, 60% of whom were referred by the Police.
