Parking on footpaths being huge issue in Muff

Elderly people, people with disabilities and parents with prams are being forced onto the main road in Muff because on an ongoing issue with motorists parking on footpaths.

Despite double yellow lines in place in certain areas, Councillor Terry Crossan claims they are being ignored.

While it’s an issue not confined to Muff, he believes Gardai need to do more to monitor such parking issues.

Riverine Community Park consultation ongoing

People are being urged to have their say on an iconic cross border community park for Donegal and Tyrone.

A consultation is ongoing in relation to The Riverine Community Park which aims to connect both sides of the border at Lifford and Strabane.

Donegal County Council are in the process of developing plans for the eastern portion of Riverine Community Park, in partnership with Derry City & Strabane District Council with €6 million already secured through the Peace IV fund for the development.

An initial public consultation process was undertaken in June 2021 for however some adjustments have been made to part of the park falling within the Derry City & Strabane District Council area.

The overall proposals include reimagining a shared parkland, to create a space, broaden the sense of community and to reinforce continuing relationships as well as promoting walking and cycling routes, ensuring accessibility for all.

The closing date for submissions is February 10th.

High speed broadband on the way to over 3,200 properties in Cresslough

High speed broadband is on the way to over 3,000 properties in Cresslough.

National Broadband Ireland has confirmed that fibre build works in Donegal are well underway.

In Cresslough, over 3,200 premises have been surveyed to date with network designs completed to deliver the new Fibre to the Home network in the area with initial works for the build started.

The next stage of the rollout involves infrastructure being put in place to facilitate the installation of the fibre.

A total of €128m is being invested in the county as a whole by National Broadband Ireland.

73 year old man fighting for life after Sligo burglary

Elderly people need more assurances that they are safe while living alone, according to a Sligo councillor.

It’s after a burglary in the Skreen area nearly weeks ago, which has left a 73 year old man fighting for his life.

Thomas Niland suffered head and upper body injuries when three men broke into his home on January 18th.

Essential sewer repair works to be carried out in Letterkenny

Work is due to get underway tomorrow to carry out essential repairs to the sewer network at the Station Roundabout in Letterkenny.

Irish Water working in partnership with Donegal County Council will carry out the works overnight to minimise disruption to homes and businesses in the area.

The works will take place from 7pm tomorrow until 7am on Wednesday.

A temporary traffic management system will be in place for the duration of works.

There was Donegal success at the Irish National Badminton Championships over the weekend.

Raphoe’s Joshus Magee took two golds. He won the mixed doubles title with Moya Ryan and the men’s doubles crown with Paul Reynolds.

Rachel Darragh would also take a 4th national women’s seniors title winning the singles competition.

Government urged to end single-sex schools in next 15 years

The Government’s being urged to end single-sex schools within the next 15 years.

Labour will publish a Bill this week which aims to discontinue gender discrimination in school admissions.

It says the current system is “outdated”, and eliminating single-sex schools would promote consent and tackle toxic masculinity.

Labour’s education spokesperson, Aodhán O’Riordáin, says Ireland lags behind other countries when it comes to co-ed schools:

‘More in the dark now than before’ – MAG PRO

The PRO of the Mica Action Group says they are more in the dark now than before.

It follows a meeting with Minister Charlie McConalogue on Friday evening which Michael Doherty says was positive in terms of voicing their issues but says they are the same issues he has raised time and time again.

There’s calls for further clarity also on whether foundations will be covered in the redress scheme. Minister McConalogue confirmed that foundations of properties would be included but Mr Doherty says that contradicts what was previously contained in the detail of the scheme.

Adjourned DCC plenary meeting to reconvene today

The adjourned plenary meeting of Donegal County Council is to reconvene this afternoon.

The meeting held last Monday was adjourned six times following much disruption.

It was then subsequently suspended after a recorded vote saw Councillor Frank McBrearty suspended from all Council Municipal District and Committee meetings for one month.

The meeting is due to get underway this afternoon at 1:30pm in the Aura Leisure Centre.

Police in Derry and Strabane concerned for whereabout of missing man

Police in Derry City and Strabane say they are concerned for the whereabouts of a man missing since yesterday afternoon.

John McDonald. John was last seen at approximately 1pm yesterday and is believed to have been wearing black Adidas tracksuit bottoms and a black Under Armour Hoodie.

He’s described as 5ft8 in height, of a medium build with short black hair.

Anyone with any information in relation to John’s whereabouts is asked to contact police on 101.
