Trust in politics damaged by DUP’s NI Protocol actions – Taoiseach

The Taoiseach says trust in politics has been damaged by the DUP’s actions over the Northern Ireland Protocol.

He also claimed that no one party should have a veto when it comes to the shutting down of the Executive.

Earlier this week, Paul Givan stepped down as first minister, while DUP leader Jeffrey Donaldson has warned they won’t return to Stormont if issues aren’t addressed.

Professor of Politics at the University of Liverpool, John Tonge, says there’s a real danger the DUP won’t come back to power-sharing after an election:

Town Centre First plan published by Government

The Government has published Town Centre First – a new policy that aims to tackle vacancy, combat dereliction and breathe new life into town centres across Donegal.

The policy contains 33 unique actions with a view towards giving towns the tools and resources they need to become more viable and attractive places in which to live, work, visit and run a business.

The policy is underpinned by multi-billion euro investment spread across major Government schemes such as the Rural Regeneration and Development Fund and the Town and Village Renewal Scheme.

For the first time, designated towns will gain their own dedicated Town Regeneration Officers, who will be crucial to driving future development.

The policy contains a range of actions designed to achieve key objectives such as social and economic revival in towns, the provision of housing, as well as addressing challenges like vacancy and derelict buildings.

DUP Agriculture Minister Edwin Poots had made the order before the resignation of Paul Givan put Stormont on the brink of collapse.

However, a court has now ruled that order should be suspended pending a full hearing on the issue.

Meanwhile, the DUP MP for East Derry says they won’t stand for any border between Britain and Northern Ireland.

Gregory Campbell says the Irish Government has to understand their position…………
